Queen Cleopatra: One of the most famous female rulers in history. She was the last queen of Egypt during the 1st century B.C.
Cleopatra was born a princess and her father was the Pharaoh Ptolemy XII. She was smart and was her father’s favorite child, who learned a lot from him on how the country was ruled.
Cleopatra’s family had ruled Egypt for 300 years.
They were the Ptolemy dynasty that had been established by the Greek ruler, Alexander the Great.
Cleopatra grew up speaking, reading & writing Greek. She also learned many other languages including Egyptian and Latin.
Cleopatra was especially known for her relationships with Julius Caesar & Mark Antony. While challenging the power of Rome, Cleopatra fell in love with the Roman General, Mark Antony.
They got married and had three kids. Their relationship had a political component where Cleopatra needed Antony to protect her crown and maintain Egypt’s independence, while Antony needed access to Egypt’s riches and resources, but they were also famously fond of each other’s company.
