“Le présent lexique a été conçu pour tous ceux qui s’intéressent à l’?gypte et à sa culture, ayant ou non une connaissance de l’arabe littéraire ou d’autres dialectes arabes. En raison du caractère fluctuant de l’arabe parlé, nous avons évité aussi bien les traductions trop relevées que celles jugées trop familières, pour nous attacher à une langue « intermédiaire ». Cette langue parlée privilégie les mots concrets ou, à défaut, les périphrases. Les mots et les phrases sont intrinsèquement liés à une situation donnée qui est celle de la vie courante. Ce lexique a été réalisé sur la base du premier ouvrage du genre, celui de Jacques Jomier. Le parler du Caire, lexique pratique français-arabe, publié par l’Ifao en 1976 et réédité en 1990. Au-delà de sa simple mise à jour, rendue nécessaire par l’évolution de la langue, on s’est attaché à étendre le vocabulaire couvert et à enrichir la liste des mots arabes correspondant aux différents sens d’un même terme français. Il a également paru utile de présenter les mots en écriture arabe et pas seulement en transcription latine. Pour autant, par sa taille, ce lexique ne saurait prétendre au nom de dictionnaire.”
